Tsinghua University will be convening a meeting to be conducted virtually on Friday, July 3, 2020, 08:00 am – 10:00 am (Beijing time, GMT+8), to share Tsinghua’s experience with university partners and education stakeholders, on the very urgent topic of online education during this unprecedented health emergency.

The meeting is themed Higher Education in the Cloud – Promise, Experience, and Expectation. It consists of in-depth presentations on various aspects of online education during the COVID-19 period (see below for the full agenda):

  • COVID-19’s implications for the delivery of higher education;
  • the interim release of Tsinghua’s research and practical outcomes stemming from its transition to online education, and;
  • identifying trends and solutions for inclusive distance learning going forward.

Tsinghua’s experience – as the first university to shift all courses online in the wake of the epidemic – and subsequent research findings that were evaluated from various angles will be shared during the meeting in the spirit of mutual learning and support.

Presentation #4: "Anti-epidemic scientific research of a graduating doctoral student"

Presentation #4: "Anti-epidemic scientific research of a graduating doctoral student", sharing by student who carried out scientific research remotely to combat the epidemic while finish all the graduation requirements, including innovative arrangement for online dissertations defense. The doctoral dissertations at the School of Life Sciences was interrupted by the outbreak and students devoted themselves to anti-epidemic research instead. Inspired by their peers, graduated decided to give up the opportunity of postdoctoral study abroad and continue to carry out the research on anti-epidemic for and in China.

Presentation #5: "Supporting children learning and growth during an epidemic", summary by teacher representative at the Tsinghua University Primary School. The primary school attached to Tsinghua University has successfully completed a lot of teaching work during the epidemic, and has become a model of online education in primary schools in China and was selected as the only primary school by the Ministry of Education for demonstrating the results of online teaching. The achievements of the affiliated primary school also reflect the social responsibility of Tsinghua University.

Presentation #7: "To be a true Tsinghua-er who constantly strive for self-improvement", presentation by grassroots level staff of teaching management. In the form of recital, the grassroots teaching management and service personnel were not afraid of difficulties, bravely shouldered heavy burden and actively carried out educational services during the epidemic. This includes teaching organization, policy implementation, technical support, teacher-student consultation and other aspects of the assurance work. Tsinghua is also proud and inspired to have staff members who insisted to continue to work in quarantine and to remotely serve our teachers and students, though family members were infected with the virus.

Presentation #8: Interim research report "Tsinghua Online Teaching and Learning: Behavior, Effectiveness and Challenge". This meta-analysis and review of empirical online learning research are part of a broader study of practices in online learning being conducted by Tsinghua Task Force on Online Education Research (TFOER, 2020). The goal of the study is primarily to provide evidence-based guidance for Tsinghua and other higher education institutions to adapt high-quality online instruction and learning.
