Online Learning: Leveraging Technology to Build Connections and Spur Action

Summary: Even before COVID-19 struck, environmental educators were weighing limiting travel to reduce carbon emissions against the benefits of face-to-face interactions. Cornell Civic Ecology Lab will draw from their experience teaching EE (Environmental Education) MOOCs and undergraduate courses to share unique features of online global learning and action communities.

Marianne Krasny

Director of the Civic Ecology Lab at Cornell University

Marianne Krasny, is professor in the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment, and Director of the Civic Ecology Lab at Cornell University. Her books include Civic Ecology: Adaptation and Transformation from the Ground Up, Urban Environmental Education Review, Communicating Climate Change: A Guide for Educators, Grassroots to Global: Broader Impacts of Civic Ecology and Advancing Environmental Education Practice. She has served as lead instructor for multiple environmental and climate education Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) for international audiences, through which she and her colleagues have established ongoing online learning and resource sharing communities for environmental activists and educators globally.

Yue Li

Research associate at Cornell University

Yue Li, is a research associate and online course instructor at Cornell University. Yue is currently doing online learning research project in environmental education MOOC, developing and teaching new courses. Through international research and outreach programs, Yue is bridging environmental education communities in China, the US and elsewhere.

The Cornell University Civic Ecology Lab has been offering online learning programs for environmental educators, university students, and the general public since 2011. Today we invite Dr. Marianne Krasny and Dr. Yue Li to share different types of online education models including high school student online research programs, environmental education MOOCs and undergraduate capstone courses. They will also share how they have used online course platforms, social media, webinars, and study groups to create global environmental learning, teaching, and action communities. Finally, they will introduce how to incorporate Environment into STEM education and show their new E-STEM Education online course.
